New Delhi: Today can be a big day for politics as the Election Commission of India (ECI) is going to announce the dates of assembly elections in five states. These elections to be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry are considered to decide the direction of national politics for the next year. Therefore, the eyes of all parties and the entire country are fixed on this press conference.

According to sources, the Election Commission may release the schedule today or in the next few days by holding a press conference. No official confirmation has come yet, but preparations are complete and the announcement can be made any time.

In which states can voting take place in how many phases?

Sources are saying that the biggest and most challenging elections will be held in West Bengal. Considering the security, sensitive area and crores of voters, voting can be held here in 3 to 4 phases (in 2021 there were 8 phases, this time it is planned to have fewer).

There is a possibility of 2 phases in Assam. Whereas preparations are going on to hold elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry in a single phase. This decision is being taken keeping in mind the security, weather and schedule of examinations.

Why are phased elections conducted?

The Election Commission conducts elections in phases keeping in mind the security arrangements, administrative preparations and weather conditions. Especially in a big state like West Bengal, where there are more sensitive areas and the number of voters is huge, it is difficult to manage everything at once. With this, elections can be held peacefully.

When can voting start and when will the results come?

According to sources, the election process may start from April and will be completed by the first week of May. After the voting is over, the results can be declared by counting at the beginning of May itself. As soon as the schedule is announced, the model code of conduct will come into force in all these states – any new announcement, transfer or government scheme will be banned.

Which states are the most focused on?

West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are the most discussed. A tough fight is expected between Trinamool Congress and BJP in Bengal – it will be a big test for Mamata Banerjee's government. In Tamil Nadu also all the parties are making full efforts. The fight for power in Kerala and Assam is also going to be interesting—the LDF government in Kerala and BJP government in Assam.
